What is leveling - Read/Write leveling is an automatic way for the memory controller to de-skew and match the timing of the DQ strobe (DQS) to clock relationship at the DDR3 DRAM. DDR3 modules use a fly-by technology for the commands, addresses, control signals, and clocks to improve the signaling, but fly-by technology has an inherent timing skew between the clock and DQ bus at the DRAM. A simple feedback feature provided by the DDR3 DRAM allows the controller to detect the amount of skew and adjust accordingly to eliminate the need to match the physical trace lengths to the DDR3 DRAM (that were once required in prior generation DRAM technology, ie DDR1, DDR2)
